Good Enough

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

Col 3:2Open Link in New Window (KJV)

09010003I remember thinking to myself  “but It’s good enough” on completion of a project I really did not put much effort into knowing full well that I could have done better.

When working in an environment where not much is expected of you it is easy to fall for the “it’s good enough” mentality. After all why should you exert yourself and over achieve while those around you are well doing just enough to get by. It would appear that our society in many respects has fallen for the “it’s good enough” mentality.

We see the lowering of moral expectations from our elected leaders and have come to accept philandering and lying as common place and permissible. It would appear that our expectations are so low that when a so called music artist or Hollywood celeb bursts out one expletive after another we award them with most innovative new artist awards and adorn them with accolades for their breaking down barriers of racism and hatred. I fail to see where our failure as a society to stand up against such moral degradation is anything to be applauded. Our society has rendered marriage inconvenient and fathers irrelevant. Our young ladies are encouraged to dress and act provocative as a means of attaining notoriety. Potty mouthed stand up comics are applauded as progressive but I find it offensive. Unless by progressive you mean we are progressing downward then I will give a resounding amen.

A progressive society is one in which they set before themselves high standards of conduct and excellence. They are not willing to settle for the “it’s good enough’ mentality. Perfection is the goal they are aiming for. Not that anyone has ever achieved perfection but when you aim for the moon and miss well at least you still land amongst the stars. But when you are aiming for anything that might get off the ground I doubt seriously if you will every soar with the eagles.

God’s word tells us to set our affections on things above and not on things of this world. It would appear that we need to spend more time looking up and not looking down or even around for that matter. When we set Heaven as our goal and the highest heights as our destination then Good enough is well not good enough.

I have heard the phrase ‘too heavenly minded to be any earthly good’ bantered around as I was growing up and it made this verse of scripture into a mockery. It seemed like those who thought about Heaven were well not good for anything so in contrast I guess those who only thought about things of this world had it together?

I have found the reverse to be true. The only way to be progressive and useful in this world is to be focused on things that are everlasting and not temporal.

By setting lofty goals and not settling for what is merely, acceptable. Aiming for an audience of one and trying to please Him who started it all would be a far nobler pursuit. Can you image God saying good enough?

Therefore to be a progressive one would have to put God first and be focused on moving upward towards a more lofty goal then what this world has to offer.

So it may be good enough but is it God enough?
